VISION FOR THE SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE INITIATIVE The purpose of the Sustainable Concrete initiative is to pave the way to halving the CO c footprint from Danish con- crete construction by 2030 in relation to 2019 levels, while simultaneously maintaining the high concrete quality and the robust life cycle costing linked to concrete construc- tion. This ambitious vision is to be achieved by establishing broad working relationships within the construction in- dustry. For this reason, partners from a number of Danish producers of concrete and cement are becoming involved in the Sustainable Concrete initiative , as are a wide variety of developers, architects, engineers, contractors and aca- demic institutions. THE DANISH CONCRETE AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IS COMITTED TO HALVING ITS CO c EMISSIONS BY 2030 IN RELATION TO THE 2019 LEVELS. We can see appreciable potential in the Sustainable Concrete initiative, where the emphasis is on new solutions, reuse and reduced consumption – which all make a contribution to reducing the carbon footprint. As a responsible developer, it’s important for us to break free from conventional thinking and find new, more sustain- able ways to manufacture and use construction materials. The Sustainable Concrete initiative aligns neatly with our policy of sustainable construction. PensionDanmark therefore certifies all its construc- tion projects to DGNB Gold standard. - TORBEN MÖGER PEDERSEN, DIRECTOR, PENSIONDANMARK The Danish concrete sector has been working for many years to make its production more sustainable. Looking at CO c in isolation, cement – which is the crucial component in concrete – ac- counts for approximately five percent of global CO c emissions. The level in Denmark is lower, however, largely because the sector has long been focused on sustainable production. That said, it is still possible to reduce the environmental footprint considerably in all situations. And this is the core mission of the new initiative, where the focus is to remain fixed on how we can turn knowledge, research and in- novation into practical applications. - THOMAS UHD HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY & EXTERNAL RELATIONS, CEMENTIR NORDIC&BALTIC, AALBORG PORTLAND, UNICON. 4
